NDIS Provider Registration and Audit Readiness: How to Choose the Right Registration Groups — full transcript

Understanding Registration Groups

Will, EnableUs Community: Hey everyone, welcome back to Getting Registered. I’m Will, and I’m here with Winter. Today we’re diving into something that honestly trips up a lot of new NDIS providers—registration groups. Winter, do you remember when you first heard about these?

Winter, EnableUs Community: Oh, absolutely. I thought it was just a fancy way of saying “what services do you want to offer?” But it’s so much more than that, right? Registration groups are basically the categories of NDIS-funded services you can apply to deliver. They set out what you’re allowed to do, and, more importantly, what you need to do to stay compliant.

Will, EnableUs Community: Yeah, and the thing is, each group comes with its own risk level. That’s where people get caught out. There’s verification-level groups, which are low risk—think cleaning, gardening, maybe transport. Then there’s certification-level groups, which are higher risk, like therapy supports or behavioural interventions. The audit requirements are totally different for each.

Winter, EnableUs Community: Exactly. If you’re looking at something like cleaning or gardening, you’re in the verification camp. The audit’s simpler, less paperwork, less stress. But if you want to do therapy supports, or, say, behavioural intervention, you’re looking at certification. That’s a much bigger commitment—more documentation, more oversight, and you need to show you’ve got the right qualifications.

Will, EnableUs Community: And I think a lot of people just tick every box, thinking, “I’ll do it all!” But your choices here really shape your whole provider journey. Like, if you pick a high-risk group, you’re signing up for a much more involved audit. It’s not just about what you want to do, it’s about what you can actually deliver safely and compliantly.

Winter, EnableUs Community: Yeah, and it’s not just about the audit, either. It’s about your resources, your team, your experience. If you’re solo, starting with a low-risk group might be the way to go. If you’ve got a team with specialist qualifications, maybe you can look at those higher-risk groups. But you’ve gotta be honest with yourself about what you can handle.

Making Smart Choices for Your Service

Will, EnableUs Community: So, let’s talk about how you actually make that decision. I mean, it’s not just ticking boxes, like you said. You’ve gotta ask yourself: What services do I actually want to deliver? Who are my participants? What’s my team’s background?

Winter, EnableUs Community: And don’t forget, what qualifications do you have? If you’re thinking about something like therapy supports, you need the right credentials. But if you’re more about helping people with daily living, maybe start with Assistance with Daily Living—that’s group 0106—or Participation in Community, which is 0125. Those are manageable, especially if you’re new.

Will, EnableUs Community: Yeah, and honestly, I learned this the hard way. When my team first started, we tried to register for, like, five different groups at once. We thought, “Let’s cover all our bases.” But it was a nightmare. The paperwork, the policies, the audit prep—it was just too much. We ended up scaling back, focusing on what we actually had experience in, and it made the whole process so much smoother.

Winter, EnableUs Community: That’s such a good point. It’s tempting to go big, but starting small is usually smarter. You can always add more groups later, once you’ve got your systems in place and you know what you’re doing. Plus, it’s way less overwhelming.

Will, EnableUs Community: Yeah, and you don’t want to burn out before you even get started. So, think about your ideal participants, your own skills, and what you can realistically manage. It’s not a race.

Winter, EnableUs Community: And if you’re not sure, talk to someone who’s done it before, or even an NDIS consultant. Sometimes just having a chat can help you see what’s actually doable for you right now.

Managing Compliance and Future Growth

Will, EnableUs Community: Alright, so let’s say you’ve picked your groups and you’re ready to go. What’s next? Well, your registration group choice basically sets the tone for your compliance and audit needs. If you’re in a certification group, you’re gonna need more policies, more documentation, and a more detailed audit. If you’re in verification, it’s a bit lighter, but you still need to show you’re up to scratch.

Winter, EnableUs Community: And here’s the thing—if you want to add new groups later, it’s not just a quick update. You’ll usually need to go through a re-audit or a variation application. I know a provider who wanted to expand into Support Coordination, that’s group 0132, but before they did, they actually got some expert advice. It saved them so much time and stress because they knew exactly what extra documentation and processes they’d need. If they’d just jumped in, it would’ve been a mess.

Will, EnableUs Community: Yeah, and I think that’s the big takeaway—your registration groups aren’t set in stone, but every change comes with its own set of hoops to jump through. So, plan ahead, but don’t be afraid to start small and build up as you go.

Winter, EnableUs Community: Absolutely. And remember, it’s not about following trends or what everyone else is doing. It’s about what fits your skills, your team, and your participants. Take your time, ask questions, and get support if you need it.

Will, EnableUs Community: Alright, that’s a wrap for today. Thanks for tuning in, everyone. Winter, always a pleasure chatting with you.

Winter, EnableUs Community: You too, Will. And thanks to everyone listening—don’t stress, you’ve got this. We’ll be back soon with more tips to help you get registered and stay compliant. Catch you next time!

Will, EnableUs Community: See ya, everyone!
