The start of a 3 part mini series

Jimmy Burroughes: Well hey there, welcome back to The Leadership Amplifier. It's Jimmy Burroughes here, and today, I'm excited because we're kicking off this three-part mini series. We're gonna dive into what I reckon are the real, gritty layers of leadership: mindset, toolset, and, a favourite of mine, the reset. Now, today's episode is super foundational—we're getting a bit spiritual but, don't worry, we've got the science to support it. Before we ever start messing around with our toolset, like fancy frameworks or time hacks, I, I truly believe we've gotta look at what's happening beneath the surface. That's where energy comes in. Think of it like preparing to take a kayak through some unpredictable rapids: if you don't check the current, it doesn’t matter how good your paddle is, you might just get swept away. So, today, we're starting with leadership energy, because if you can channel that, then tackling all the mechanical stuff becomes a heck of a lot easier. Let's jump in.

The Science of Leadership Energy

Jimmy Burroughes: You know, when we talk about leadership energy, some folks might roll their eyes and think it's just airy-fairy stuff. But hold on, there's hard science here—promise. Neuroscientists have shown that both our brains and hearts operate using electrical impulses. Bit wild, right? The heart, for instance, generates an electromagnetic field that actually radiates out from our bodies. We're like a speaker blasting out sound - except this electromagnetic energy is invisible to us.

Jimmy Burroughes: There's research showing this field can be felt by people nearby. So, when you're a leader walking into a room, your state—your emotional 'weather'—really is shifting the atmosphere. It's like being a walking, talking weather system. If you've ever walked into a meeting where, I dunno, everything just feels a bit tense—nobody's said anything, but you can almost feel it in the air—that's real. You’re picking up on the leader’s field, or whoever’s holding the energy in the room.

Jimmy Burroughes: Now, I can't help but think back to my time in the military—river crossings were always a big part of our training. Imagine this big, fast-flowing river, everyone on the team looking to me for the signal to move. The thing is, if I showed any nerves or hesitation, that uncertainty flowed right through the team like a current, making everyone a bit twitchy. But if I steadied my breathing—really grounded myself—suddenly, it was as if the waters literally calmed for everyone. The team could sense it, even before I said anything. So, it's not just words. It’s energy—literal, felt, physiological energy—changing the group dynamic. I now practice the same thing with my young daughter. She checks with me to see how the weather looks before we do something new. Your team are the same.

Mindset Ripple Effect

Jimmy Burroughes: So let's talk about the mindset side of all this. In my book, Beat Burnout, especially in Chapter 2, I go into this abundance versus scarcity mindset thing. And honestly, it’s huge. If you walk into situations with a scarcity mindset, it’s like constantly paddling upstream. Everyone feels on edge, worried, holding back... it’s contagious in the worst way. But shift to abundance? Opportunities seem to show up, people become more generous with ideas and support—it's like the current suddenly turns in your favour.

Jimmy Burroughes: And it’s not all conscious, either. Some researchers describe it as what we’re broadcasting on our own little ‘RF frequency’—the radio frequency, sort of, that signals our mood even if we’re not saying a word. Teams pick up on these signals. When a leader projects uncertainty or anxiety, it travels fast and, trust me, it’s nearly impossible to paddle against that current. That’s why Satya Nadella’s shift at Microsoft is so powerful. Before he took over, the whole place was running on competition and fear—scarcity everywhere. But when he brought in this mindset of growth and learning, you could practically feel the change ripple out, right down to teams you’d never expect. Suddenly, people felt safe enough to try new things and collaborate. That’s leadership energy at work, creating real transformation.

Jimmy Burroughes: Equally have you ever heard of the Law of Attraction? It isnt magic. It's shifting your mindset toward one of abundance and then tuning your energetic radio to pick up the abundance stations. Give it a try.

Practical Energy Shifting Techniques

Jimmy Burroughes: Alright, so you’re probably wondering—‘Okay Jimmy, this sounds great, but what do I do about it on Monday morning, in between the chaos of back-to-back meetings?’ Here’s where some practical tools come in. The first is the energy audit. Before you walk into a meeting or make a big decision, just stop and check in with yourself. Ask, ‘What energy am I bringing right now? Is this what my team needs—or am I about to bring the storm clouds?’ Even a 10 second pause can change everything.

Jimmy Burroughes: Another one I’ve borrowed from both neuroscience and the military is using sound—or more specifically, binaural beats. It’s two slightly different sound frequencies into each ear, and they’ve been shown to help you shift your energy state. If you need to ramp up or calm down, they’re a lifesaver, especially during those mad dashes between Zoom calls. I use it on my airpods and you can find it on spotify, youtube or a variety of other places. It's incredible.

Jimmy Burroughes: And let’s not forget my old favourite—the 4-4-4 breathing pattern. I always mess this up—sometimes I count too fast, sometimes too slow—but it’s basically breathing in for four counts, hold for four, out for four. Do that for a couple of rounds, and your parasympathetic nervous system starts to settle, the adrenaline drops, and suddenly you’ve got your head above water again.

Jimmy Burroughes: So that’s a few ideas to get you started shifting your energy, even if you’re just grabbing a coffee between meetings. Next time, we’ll dive into the toolset piece—practical, hard skills to amplify your leadership impact even more. In the meantime, remember: the energy you bring really does change everything. Catch you in the next one.
